Former England futsal international, Alex Sykes, saw his youthful Rednock under 18s side cruise in to the third round of the English Schools National Cup with a crushing victory over their Bristol based opponents, Hanham High School, writes Richard Joyce.
Missing star man Ed Robinson, who picked up an injury playing for the Cirencester Town Development Squad in their Hellenic Floodlit Cup victory over Fairford Town the night before saw his strike partner, Alex Higgs, who had also been in action in the successful Gloucester City under 18’s FA Youth Cup winning squad from the previous night, open the scoring after a matter of minutes.
Hanham bounced back almost instantly however, and slack Rednock defending allowed their target man the opportunity to poke an equaliser past Liam Jones in the Rednock goal.
The prolific Alex Higgs curled in after 20 minutes later to regain the lead for the home side and he added another, bringing up his hat-trick, to make it 3-1 as Rednock firmly pushed on towards half time.
The introduction of George Dolling saw Rednock extend their lead as he followed in a Jack Higgs free kick.
Winger, Jack Higgs, then got in on the scoring act and he made it 5-1 to the hosts with a perfectly executed chip over the on rushing goalkeeper.
Alex Higgs, hungry for more goals, saw his hammered free kick from 30 yards slam against the visitors’ crossbar and the Gloucester City youngster sewed up the goal scoring for the first half, by driving in to leave the score at the break at 6-1 to the home side.
Rednock extended their lead early on in the second half when Alex Higgs recorded his last strike of the game, leaving him with a tally of five, on 52 minutes.
Hanham were not done fighting however, and the Bristolians managed to grab a goal back to make it 7-2, but Callum Dummelow fired in another for Rednock, the home sides eighth.
Another successful member of the Gloucester City youth cup winning squad from the previous evening, Steve Msowoya, saw his marvellous effort tipped over with the visiting goalkeeper producing a magnificent save.
Joel Murdoch added a ninth for Rednock minutes later with the pick of the home sides’ efforts on goal. The left back, who is a member of the under 18’s side at Hellenic Premier side Slimbridge, saw his effort on goal find the top corner as Rednock eased towards the finish.
Ryan Malpass steered in late on, in what was his first game of football for the home outfit in nearly nine months, to conclude a dramatic and successful start to Alex Sykes youngsters National Cup campaign.
The Dursley based school will host Gloucester District affiliated school, Crypt, in the next round.
