Cirencester Town missed out on a County Cup final place after their heroic efforts were denied in a penatly shoot-out.
Facing a Bristol City team containing four six-figure signings, Ciren were given the run around in the opening quarter and it took them 24 minutes to make their first sustained attack. Then, four minutes later, Ciren scored.
Scott Griffin lost his marker James Wilson, met a perfect Jon Else free kick and nodded over the diving Lewis Carey.
Championship side Bristol came back strongly but Ciren had found their feet and kept their shape. Their back four made sure that no matter how many pretty patterns were run in front of them the final pass was not going to penetrate. Long range and increasingly erratic Bristol shots never troubled the steady Mike Hedges in the Ciren goal.
Jody Bevan could have sealed the match when his header off an Ollie Pitt cross hit the bar on 47 minutes. Though Hedges did have to make a superb close-in reaction save on 71 minutes off Aaron Holloway, it was Ciren who were finishing the game on top with Scott Claridge a constant threat on the right flank.
Yannick Bolasie, wasteful in his shooting throughout, finally hit the target on 87 minutes to take the match to extra time. It seemed as if the next goal would seal it. Bobby Reid did that for Bristol on 104 minutes, with a clinical finish.
Ciren refused to concede. With Griffin immense in holding the ball up, they attacked incessantly.
On 113 minutes, a set of right-side passes ended with Claridge crossing and Jon Else leaping to nod in for 2-2.
Lewis Carey then won it for Bristol. On 118 minutes, he raced out to deny Griffin a winner. Minutes later, he saved two Ciren penalties in the shoot-out as well as potting the final Bristol spot kick himself.
