Rose boosts Cleeve staff

BISHOP’S Cleeve have boosted their club staff with the recruitment of former Gloucester City midfielder Matt Rose in a player/assistant managerial role, writes Richard Joyce.

The experienced midfield man ended a lengthy second spell with Blue Square Bet North side Gloucester at the end of last season and links up with Southern League South & West Division outfit Cleeve as they look to make a push for the play offs next season.

Rose is a former team mate of current Bishop’s Cleeve manager Alex Sykes from their playing days together at Gloucester where they were both part of the Tigers team that gained promotion through the Southern Premier Division play offs.

In fact it was Rose who scored the only goal against Farnborough in that play off final that sent the club in to non league football’s second tier with Sykes finishing as top goal scorer for the Tigers that season.

Rose can also count Cirencester Town, Newport County, Weston-super-Mare and Cheltenham Town among his former clubs.

He joins a Cleeve team that have already tied down a number of impressive performers from last season to new contracts including front man Carl Brown and goalkeeper James Nortei.

Cleeve’s opening pre season game against Pershore Town fell victim to the rain at the weekend so Rose could potentially line up against his most recent former club when Cleeve and Gloucester unite in pre season action this coming weekend.
