FA Cup: Bishops Cleeve 1 – 2 Chippenham Town

The Villagers took the game to their Premier Division opponents, in the 13th minute Carl Brown stung Conor Thompson’s fingers with a shot from the angle of the penalty area which he managed to palm out and minutes later Jimmy Nortei’s clearance was headed on by Brown and Michael Tambling to Will Gayton who volleyed straight at Thompson. Chippenham in reply had a close range volley by Alan Griffin tipped over the bar by Jimmy Nortei. Cleeve deservedly took the lead when Thompson could only palm a Gayton cross out to Brown whose first time shot was deflected in by Tambling. The Villagers were harshly reduced to 10 men when Gayton was dismissed for an off the ball incident and Chippenham tried to put their advantage to good use but they found Nortei in excellent form as he made a double save to close range efforts by Scott Lye and Griffin.
The second half began with Chippenham continuing their aerial bombardment and in the 62nd minute Luke Ballinger put in a hopeful high ball into the Cleeve penalty area, it bounced through to Brandon Barnes on the far post to bundle the ball home. Chippenham took the lead in the 70th minute when another high ball was launched into the Cleeve goal area by Ballinger; with Griffin backing into impede Nortei the ball fell for Steve Casey to tuck the ball home from close range. The referee evened the sides up with 8 minutes remaining when he dismissed Iain Harvey for a dangerous challenge, but the Villagers couldn’t break through a now packed Chippenham defence.
