Bishops Cleeve 2 – 3 Merthyr

Despite having the majority of the possession Merthyr found themselves two behind at the interval. The Villagers took the lead in the 18th minute when Matt Rose headed in a Mike Davis corner, and they doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Carl Brown put long pin point pass to Stuart Midwinter who controlled it on his chest before lobbing over the advancing Giles Cutlan. Merthyr’s only clear chance came on 36 minutes when an unusual error by James Nortei let in Steve Williams but his eventual shot went well wide.
Merthyr upped the tempo from the start of the second half, Williams got clear of Mike Davis but his shot was beaten out by the advancing Nortei. They pulled one back on 50 minutes when a deep corner found Gary Colbourne on the edge of the penalty area and his low shot found its way through the crowded area. With Merthyr pushing for an equaliser it left them exposed at the back, Crowford put Midwinter through but Cutlan was out quickly to tackle him. Twice Carl Brown got clear but his first effort was put out by Williams and his second went inches over the angle of post and bar. Merthyr equalised on 81 minutes when Jason Welsh headed in a Kris Leek corner. The Villagers had the opportunity to seal the game when Cutlan made a rash challenge on Brown as he again got clear of the defence. After several minutes delay for Brown to be taken off, Jake Lee’s penalty kick crashed off the crossbar. 4 minutes into time added on Jamie Rewbury headed home another Leek corner.
