Though dominating the game in both possession and attempts on goal the Villagers failed to take the 3 points
Kicking up the slope in the first half Cleeve took the game to the home side, Will Gayton was first to show when he put in a shot from just inside the penalty area that went inches wide, then Stuart Midwinter put in a cross that just over Michael Tambling, Carl Brown recovered the ball and laid it back the Alex Hoyle whose probing shot was held by Jason Harvell underneath his cross bar. In reply Wimborne’s Scott Arnold and George Webb combined down their left with the latter putting in a cross which Micky Hubbard could only head well wide. Jake Lee put a high ball to Midwinter who brought Michael Jackson into play, his shot was part blocked and Harvell came out to grab the ball off Midwinter’s toe as he was about to volley it. The Villagers took the lead in the 28th minute; Matt Rose picked up a loose ball, burst into the penalty area and was brought down by Scott Arnold. Jackson put the spot kick well out the reach of Harvell. The home side created few chances Steve Smith put in a weak effort from 18 yards straight at James Nortei, Arnold crossed to Smith but his header went well over and Jamie Davidson twice found himself in space, but on both occasions Sam Avery got across to clear the danger. Gayton again caused the Wimborne defence problems when he cut in from the right, outpacing them and putting a left foot shot inches wide with Harvell static.
The Villagers were unlucky not to get a second penalty 2 minutes into the second half, Jackson threaded a ball through to Midwinter and as he broke clear of Arnold, the full back pulled him back but the Referee, still on the half way line, failed to notice it. Cleeve put on the pressure, Brown robbed Jordan Cole and crossed to Midwinter, Harvell made an instinctive block Adam Costello could only clear to Gayton whose fierce cross was inches away from Midwinter’s lunge. Wimborne on one of their rare attacks into the Cleeve penalty area were awarded a penalty when Avery was adjudged to have brought down Smith. Hubbard put the spot kick away. In the 68th minute Alex Hoyle put the ball down the line to Gayton who brought the ball back over Cole and put in a right foot volley that Harvell just managed to tip over the bar. Minutes later inter-play between Brown and Lamin Sankoh caused problems and a scrambled clearance fell to Rose whose shot was collected by Harvell at the foot of his post. The Villagers defence had a minor scare when Jake Lee miscued a clearance and the ball fell towards Davidson but Nortei raced out to clear the danger.
