Winchester City 0 – 2 Bishops Cleeve

The Villagers thoroughly deserved the three points as they dominated the game throughout and an outstanding performance by home ‘keeper Rory Anderson denied them a bigger score line.

Anderson was called into action as early as the 10th minute, Michael Davis chased a ball to the goal line and put in a low cross into the goal area to Will Gayton unfortunately the ball took an awkward bounce and Anderson got across to save with his legs. It was Michael Davis again who caused problems for the home defence when he floated a free kick to Sam Avery whose shot from 6 yards was again saved by the ‘keeper’s legs. Any attack from the home side was thwarted by Jake Lee and Sam Avery, both putting in sturdy performances.

Cleeve attempted to play good football on what was a bumpy playing surface, a flowing move involving Sam Rawlings, Michael Tambling and Will Gayton made space for debutant Matt Liddiard to shoot from the edge of the penalty area this was collected by Anderson at the second attempt. Michael Davis had a shot from 30 yards which Anderson collected underneath his cross bar. The Villagers finally got the breakthrough in the 61st minute, Michael Davis put in a sharp low cross that found Stuart Midwinter, his close range effort was saved by Anderson but Matt Liddiard was on the spot to tuck away the rebound. They doubled their lead two minutes later, Jake Lee headed down an Anderson clearance to Stuart Midwinter, who was 5 yards into the Winchester half, his jinked past three of the opposition before unleashing a right foot shot from 35 yards into the roof of the net with Anderson just a spectator. Anderson denied the Villagers again when he scrambled across his goal to palm away a Lee Davis 35 yard effort and recovered quickly to collect the ball before Stuart Midwinter could get to it.
